'Global Weirding': Extreme Climate Events Dominate The Summer

Richard Lindzen:

"In an article in press (Trenberth et al. 2010, hereafter TFOW), we show that LC09 is gravely flawed and its results are wrong on multiple fronts. These are the major issues we found:
* The LC09 results are not robust.
* LC09 misinterpret air-sea interactions in the tropics
* More robust methods show no discrepancies between models and observations
* LC09 have compared observations to models prescribed with incomplete forcings
* LC09 incorrectly compute the climate sensitivity
... While climate models are known to struggle with many aspects of tropical climate, especially in regards to its coupled variability, the problems claimed by LC09 are not among them."

In short, on the topic which he has chosen to make the hallmark of his career, Richard Lindzen is proven absolutely wrong. He's wrong regardless of whether that's the result of his incompetence or his corrupt character, but in policy debates, it's much easier and much more effective on public opinion to just state two facts: "His iris hypothesis is totally debunked, and he works for Big Oil."

"Lindzen charges oil and coal interests $2,500 a day for his consulting services; his 1991 trip to testify before a Senate committee was paid for by Western Fuels, and a speech he wrote, entitled "Global Warming: the Origin and Nature of Alleged Scientific Consensus," was underwritten by OPEC."
