I admit I know less about the installed transmission technology than I'd like to know. On electric theory, I think if I looked at a Smith Chart I'd re-learn how to use it within five minutes. But I don't know much about the equipment installed in different places.
As an indication of what I don't know, my reaction to your statement

... is to wonder why, and to wonder how far power generation normally, currently is from the end users. Can you recommend me some reading material on the grid? I'm especially interested in informed discussion of costs, like the calculations that are the basis for the "$1m/mile super-grid" cost estimate, and how many miles of that would be needed. Thanks!
