Considerin
g that the leading theories for unificatio
n involve wavelike vibration of strings in 10 or 11 dimensions
, and considerin
g that the expansion has continued for 13.7 Billion years and is predicted by leading theories to continue expanding, either eternally or for trillions of years, I'd have to agree that "splash" is a much more informativ
e allegory than "bang" which was intended as a pejorative anyway, invented by some Christian zealot (specifica
lly Catholic, if I recall correctly) very shortly after Hubble's observatio
n of universal expansion.
Whenever we're talking religion versus faith as a source of informatio
n about physical reality, I think it's worth mentioning that the vaguely religious Einstein objected to the clearly, meticulous
ly observed fact of universal expansion because he _preferred
_, Bartleby-l
ike, to believe in a static universe -- as he objected to the probabilis
tic facts of quantum mechanics -- not for physical or mathematic
al reasons, but on philosophi
cal grounds deeply rooted in preconcept
ions that he himself linked explicitly to his religious heritage. Decades of observatio
n have proven him dead wrong on both counts.
Religion is such a poor source of informatio
n about reality that even the great Albert Einstein's attempts to substitute his religious faith for objective observatio
ns of physical reality _never_ succeeded. In fact, his most religiousl
y-influenc
ed beliefs about physics led him directly to the most scientific
ally worthless, utterly disproved ideas he has ever expressed.
